Last year, over one million refugees went to Europe. A ruling by the highest appeals court showed mercy to an immigrant that was starving. The Supreme court stated that he just took the possession of a small amount of food, which was $4.70 worth of sausage and cheese, and he did it out of a need for nourishment. Therefore, he just did something that was required in order for him to live. The court made a statement that this is not considered a crime. Many Italians have endured high rates of poverty, as well as unemployment. Pope Francis even said that, "These people stand at the edges of our great avenues, in our streets, in deafening anonymity. They become part of an urban landscape which is more and more taken for granted, in out eyes, and especially in out hearts," (Pope Francis). The pope even invited many people who are living in poverty, to Rome. Overall, the Italian court spared the homeless shoplifter.
